Why Professional Sewage Cleanup Matters

Category 3 Is a Health Hazard

Sewage water contains pathogens that require specialized containment, PPE, and cleaning chemistry. DIY cleanup commonly spreads contamination to unaffected areas and creates a much larger remediation job.

  • Sewage water carries pathogens that need specialized handling
  • Proper containment, PPE, and cleaning chemistry are required
  • DIY cleanup commonly spreads contamination and enlarges the job
Containment and PPE isolate the Category 3 hazard.

Porous Materials Must Be Removed

Drywall, carpet pad, and insulation in direct contact with Category 3 water cannot be salvaged per IICRC S500. We remove, document, and dispose of affected materials properly.

  • Porous materials touching Category 3 water cannot be salvaged
  • Removal follows IICRC S500 standards
  • Affected materials removed, documented, and disposed of properly
Affected porous materials bagged for disposal.

Documented, Verified, Restored

Every job ends with photo documentation of the cleaned area, surface sampling where appropriate, and a clear scope of work. You get records that the affected area has been properly remediated.

  • Photo documentation of the cleaned area
  • Surface sampling where appropriate
  • Clear scope of work and remediation records
Surface sampling documents a remediated space.

Sewage Backup FAQ

Can I stay in my home during cleanup?
Usually not in the affected area. Containment isolates it from the rest of the home, but we recommend staying out of the contaminated space until cleanup is complete. We'll walk you through specifics at the assessment.
What has to be thrown away?
Porous materials that absorbed Category 3 water — drywall below the water line, carpet pad, insulation, and some upholstered items — must be removed per IICRC S500. Non-porous surfaces (tile, sealed concrete, hard furniture) can typically be cleaned and sanitized.
Do you find and fix the source?
We identify and stop the immediate backup. If plumbing repair, main-line clearing, or septic work is needed, we coordinate with or hand off to a licensed plumber. Cleanup without source correction is temporary.
How long does cleanup take?
Most residential jobs take 3–7 days from initial containment through final drying and clearance. Larger or more complex jobs take longer.
